|The Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica, CA
Chatting with a friend while in Santa Monica last week, she noticed that I’d bought a Huntley Hotel Hoodie. I choose to purchase commemorative things to mark huge aha-moments, or things that move me in some way. The Huntley is a pricey hotel in the area – pretty much the priciest. I chose to stay there for the event rather than be inconvenienced by staying at another in the area and it felt GOOD!
As you know, I hosted a virtual training with top soul-inspired entrepreneurs. These are people I admire, sincerely look up to and they have taught me a lot about how to go from being BROKE and defeated to being fulfilled and making money in my business.
On some of the calls we had time to have some Q & A and two calls were fully dedicated to giving people business makeovers…
The most common thing I saw in people’s challenges with their business is they had a passion but they were confused as to how to get their business in front of people to get clients and customers.
To see brilliant people stuck, scared and broke is heart-breaking for me. To blame the economy or how it feels “wrong” to sell or being so used to “just getting by,” I am reminded of my mission. It’s hard to see people forget that they have what it takes to be successful.
I also remember what that feels like… I know what it’s like to know you have a big mission and you are not making money and now sure what to do.
In order to turn your passion into a successful business, not just a time-sucking, expensive hobby, you must know four things:
1. You have what it takes AND you cannot do it by yourself.
STOP trying to do it alone and telling yourself that if you “wait a little longer, something will turn out.” It’s okay to ask for help. Do what ever it takes to hire help and a mentor.
If you are a coach or consultant of any kind and you don’t have a mentor, then you are out of alignment. How do you expect people to hire you when they feel scared and they aren’t sure how they will pay for it if you aren’t doing it yourself? This may mean you get a part-time job, take out a loan, put something on a credit card, sell stuff….
Are you willing to DO something you have never done so you can have what you have never had?
2. Know your unique, benefit-based message.
What is your unique message? What is it that you do? I see a lot of soul-inspired entrepreneurs, especially in the coaching and healing world, talk about how they “help people go deep into their soul,” “create more joy and emotional freedom,” “love deeply…”
What does that really mean and will that compel people to pull out their wallet and pay for it? You have got to be tangible with results when you explain what you do.
When you can speak to the top things people struggle with and tie it into your service or product then you will speak to people’s hearts. You are the much needed answer they have been looking for. It comes down to the basic pain points – do you help people make or save money, look or feel better, or save time? Every service and product on the planet ties into those top three pain points and when you do that my friend, you will be appealing to your market.
3. Marketing is NOT having a website or a logo.
For two years I stayed behind my computer tweaking my logos and website, designing my business card and wasting time on social media. When instead I could have been out there talking to people, networking and engaging with people to get business. Networking and going to events is what got me clients.
The TOP question I received on last week’s training from people around the world was how to get more clients. You get more clients by sales and marketing. I know when I first heard this, I thought there has to be another way because I felt that it impeded on my soul purpose of serving people. Guess what? If you have no clients, you aren’t serving people.
Marketing is simply getting your business in front of people and inviting people to invest in themselves through the product or service you offer.
4. Believe in yourself.
This is what breaks my heart the most. Have we as human beings been conditioned so much so that it’s rare to be confident more often than not? Trust me, I have my days too where I think “What the hell kind of idea was this…did little ol’ me really think I could pull this off?”
The very fact that you have the idea is the only proof you need that you can do it. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even enter your stream of consciousness. What ever you BELIEVE is what you can ACHIEVE. As much as those little cheesy phrases make me roll my eyes, it’s true.
The biggest gift you can give the world is to believe in yourself. Even when people resist your growth (which always happens when you uplevel), remember who you really are and do it anyway.
We’re approaching three full weeks into 2012. Is anything different so far? Remember it’s often the small changes that bring the biggest rewards. This brings me to the point of this week’s article…are you still doing everything yourself yet you want a different outcome this year?
I see it all of the time…brilliant people getting burned out and things fall through the cracks because you can’t keep up with it all. You know you need to hire someone, usually it’s a coach and/or a virtual assistant but you have ONE BIG PROBLEM.
You don’t know how you will afford it.
I have felt like that before. I feel it every time I uplevel or add a support team. And guess what? It’s not about your budget. It’s about a DECISION.
“But Angela, I literally don’t have money to pay someone right now. What do I do?” I hear this a lot and this is what you do.
Until you have made a decision, there is nothing to worry about. Nothing. Don’t spend a second thinking about how you will pay for something until you have first made the decision that you are going to do it.
Now assuming you have made the decision then we can have a conversation about what you can do TODAY to make this happen.
Making a decision means you cut off all other possibilities – you don’t have a backup plan or plan B, C, D…. You are focused on one outcome and you are committed, not just interested, to make it happen.
Make the decision and the HOW will ALWAYS show up. The problem is then when you are in a stretch like this, most people want it to be super easy to prove that they are doing the right thing. Sigh….I wish that was the case.
You can be in the FLOW of your perfect path and there will still be turbulence. It’s called being an entrepreneur.
It’s just two steps, this is how you do it:
1. Make the decision.
2. Fund the decision. And how you pay for it is:
How are you doing with your New Years Resolutions so far?
If you are like me then maybe you think resolutions aren’t so hot, but setting realistic goals all the time works better for you. Either way, have you ever set a goal, only to fall short of reaching it?
Many times people set goals that are unrealistic. It’s too much change too soon. You would have to be superwomen or superman to reach the goals you set for yourself. Check out tip #5 below to download my Money Tracking Sheets I use in my business. 🙂
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, however it’s a great time to get clear on what you want in the new year. I DO love goal setting though and personally like to break it down into 30-day and 90-day goals.
In fact, I created an accountability group with three other friends as we focus on our 90-day health goals. We have shared what actions we are taking to reach our 90-day goal. When we do it, we are treating ourselves to a spa day. If we don’t do it, we all outlined what we will give to each other as a consequence.
One of the things I’m adding to my 2012 is more quality family and friend time and during that time being really present with them.
Here I am with my mom (on the left) and my sister on New Years Eve. My husband and I hosted a small gathering of a few friends and family to bring in the new year. It was a great time and at the stroke of midnight, I brought out the rice crispy treat birthday cake and we sang Happy Birthday to my hubby whose birthday is January 1st.
Thank you for being part of my Soul Vision Business tribe and making a difference through your business.
Folks keep talking about “having a list.” This is referring to your email list and you can create a healthy 6-figure business with an email list less than 1,000 people. (I did!) You don’t need a ton of people, you just need qualified and targeted people. While having a big list is GREAT, but it doesn’t matter how many people you have on it if they aren’t people in your target market who want to hear from you.
Having an email list is important and it grows over time so don’t get discouraged if you are first starting out.
