Yesterday, a friend of mine posted about her feeling about the racism that is staring us in the face in the white supremacist rally in Virginia in the US.  I have not been able to get this off my mind, but most importantly, how I responded to her post. I told her that I didn’t know the words to say. I recently experienced a very challenging thing personally – something I’m sure I’ll talk about in the future, just not right now. One of the hardest things during this deep time of healing was the people who didn’t say anything. They didn’t acknowledge my pain. They stayed silent. The reasons I heard were things like: “I don’t know what to say and what if I say the wrong thing?” “You’re strong Angella, you’ll be fine.” “What is there to say, this happens all of the time, you’ll be okay.” But the silence was the thing that hurt the most. I did this same thing to my friend. I told myself that I didn’t know what to say. But the truth is, I did know what to say, I was just too scared to say it. One of my BIGGEST pet peeves in relationships is if you don’t speak up, it’s not a friendship or relationship that I’ll invest my time in.
