How To Build A List That Builds Your Business

The Unfortunate Facts: Putting an event on Facebook or Twitter is NOT the way to get butts in seats. An email once a month or sporadically to your list will not build your business. Just having a “opt in to get my newsletters” on your website is not enough anymore. Having an email list that is full of people who want to hear from you will: Increase your word-of-mouth referrals Attract joint ventures, affiliates, clients and speaking opportunities. Establish you as an expert in your market Build your business Attract your ideal clients MUCH MORE! Common Mistakes (and the sure-fire way to piss people off 🙂 and/or confuse your market and a confused mind will always say no.) Using gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc. to send your mass emails – this is technically SPAM. Get an email manager like Mail Chimp, 1 Shopping Cart or Infusionsoft. [If you have online products that you are selling then get a program that is a shopping cart and email manger in ONE program. The only two programs that I know of that do that are 1 Shopping Cart and Infusionsoft.] I’ve heard that Mailchimp is a great basic email manager that you can also put images in to make pretty newsletters. (People like pictures so this is a great idea.) Adding anyone you know to your newsletter list. I admit that when I first started my businesses I added friends, family, people I met once who gave me their business card, etc to my email list because I didn’t know any better. When you know better you do better. Make this pledge, “I...
No Apologies for Authenticity

No Apologies for Authenticity

“Be what you are. This is the first step toward becoming better than you are.” ~Julius Charles Hare A couple of weeks ago I was enjoying a dinner date with my hubby and there was a table of some cute female 20-somethings next to us. Every time any of them asked the server for something, or asked a question about the menu, or asked for something on their order to be customized, they apologized. All four women did this. I listened and realized how many conversations I hear that start out with an apology for making a request for what they want. When something triggers me this way I always ask myself how it’s a mirror for something in my own life. Where was I apologizing for what I wanted? What if we just said what we wanted to say? “I’m sorry, but could you tell me the time.” Truth: I’m committing to be on time and would love it if you can tell me what time it is. “I’m sorry to bother you but I would like to let you know what program I have coming up because I think you would be a great fit.” Truth: I believe in you and I know what I have to offer you will make a difference for your life. I care enough about you to make sure you know what options you have to have the life you want! “It’s not a big deal, I can call you when you have more time. Sorry to bother you.” Truth: I could really use some support right now and would appreciate just...
Change Starts with a Whisper

Change Starts with a Whisper

“Never underestimate the power of a few committed people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Meade Yesterday I saw the movie “The Help” and it hit me in a deep place; it moved me. The Help is a story revealing the experiences of how the hired help was treated in the south during the time of Martin Luther King Jr. It’s amazing to think that less than 60 years ago there was still segregation. A favorite line from the movie is “Courage isn’t just about being brave, it’s about overcoming fear and daring to do what is right for your fellow man.” One thing I know for sure is it takes a whole lot of courage to build a business. People you thought would support you won’t. People you didn’t know you could rely on will surprise you. Most of all, you will surprise you. In the moments it’s the toughest, you are the only one who can pick yourself up and choose into a new possibility of success. And you are your own worst enemy. Your inner voices of self doubt, even if just for a second, are louder than the biggest naysayers in your life. Chances are, you started a business not because you were bored or had nothing else to do. You started your business because you have a mission – a message to make a difference for the world. There is something inside of you that KNOWS you can make a change. And the change starts with a whisper. Tips to building your business this fall:...

When to Push and When to Stop: 8 Steps to Get What You Want

How do you know when it’s time to shift directions in your business or push through it? Many people think that the second it gets hard it’s a “sign” that it’s not supposed to happen. This is a HUGE misconception and it’s giving people the validation they are looking for to quit. When you are faced with a challenge, fear or detour in your business, you have two options, push or quit. There is no stopping. Stopping or “throwing in the towel” is a nicer way of quitting. Are you a quitter? Are do you want to see your goal become a reality? The first thing is to make the DECISION of what you want. What is it that you want? Declare it, focus on it, then figure out the how. (hint, once you’ve made the decision, the how will unfold if you let it.) So when do you know that the road you are going down needs to shift, or when to take a rest, or change directions? Eight steps get what you want: 1. Hold the Vision – what do you want? What does it feel like? What results will it create in your life. Know this vision intimately. You know exactly how much money you want to make a month, not “around this much” or “$5,000 would be nice.” What do you want. My favorite tool is Ideal Life Vision. 2. Make the Decision – holding the vision is the feel good part. But have you made the decision? Are you waiting for the perfect time, until you have more money, until something else to change...
