As a natural connector, it’s easy to see how to pair people up with solutions for their life and business. I have people who tell me years after attending one of my events that the people they connected to are still people they do business with. It’s just what I do.

Over the holidays this past year, after the president of the US was announced, I spent several weeks in deep thought. I was asking myself this question: what can I do to make a difference.

The importance of connection, collaboration, and community came up over and over again. So I made the commitment to have more connection chats with people. After all, relationships are what a successful and sustainable business are built upon. But as a natural connector, I’ve been burned out by a lack of reciprocal connections or even thank-yous. The other challenge I’ve experienced with connection chats as I call them, or potential JV chats is the lack of reciprocity in how we can support each other. Over the years, I have done a lot of introductions and connections and not received the same level of effort.

My primary love language is Words of Affirmation, so I know that not receiving a thank-you for the connections I make probably makes a bigger impact on me.

Additionally, as a connector one of the shadows is you are so busy doing all of the connecting, you aren’t building your own business. It can be common to do the connecting but not receive anything back from people, even a thank-you.

Here’s the other thing – this is not about “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.” One of the things I’ve clearly looked at is am I the person and are my programs, products, and events the kind of quality that people feel good about sharing? I know deeply serve people and my products and events are great, but it’s an important question to ask yourself.

Shannon Hernandez, a client, colleague, and friend, and creator of the Content Personality Wheel, and I were talking about this because she’s also a kick-ass connector and we realized that people just don’t know how to be a connector. And sometimes people just need a few tips to avoid the mistakes that we were seeing like:

  • not saying thank you
  • not reciprocating
  • unsure of how to have a connection chat that serves both people
  • and much more

So we did this free training for our communities and provided a lot of insight of how you can amplify connections to build your business and get referrals!
