You can’t do anything for your clients.

I heard this from a trainer and knew it was true.

I remember the first time I hosted a 12-month mastermind with about 10 clients. Half of them were creating improved results. Half them weren’t.

I looked at what was going on for my clients. Why were some of them “successful” and others weren’t, at least in that timeframe.

I also looked at the mastermind I participated in. Same thing: some of us had created the tangible money results and others hadn’t.

Bottom line: when the person does the work, it works.

The question then becomes are the results duplicatable and sustainable?

Let’s break this down into the Marketing Archetypes:

Guru Stars don’t care a whole lot about their client’s results. In fact, I recently heard a charismatic Guru Star speak at an event and he said this from stage to an audience of over 200 people: “I don’t give a shit about my client’s results.”

Hmmmm….that can actually be a really healthy outlook. You just focus on delivering value and it’s up to the person to take it and do something with it.

Truth Guides on the other hand, ofter over-care about their clients results. They often take it personal if their clients don’t get results.

The shadow side of this is Truth Guides can attract the type of client who will blame the coach if they don’t get results. This is typical if the Truth Guide pretends to be a Guru Star and markets in that archetype.

Why? The client wants to be told what to do (which is what Guru Stars do really well) and Truth Guides don’t work that way.

Supporters: Since they are doing actual tasks and work in the person’s business, then yes they take responsibility for the clients results. However, if the client tells the supporter what to do, it’s up to the supporter to give the client feedback if that task will yield a result or not.

The shadow side of Supporters is they can wait for the task list and they don’t insert their expertise.

Connectors: When they connect two people (the person with the problem with the person with the solution), it’s up to the pair to determine if it’s a fit or not. So there aren’t as many traps with Connectors taking over-responsibility for their clients results.

Overall, we all have access to information and resources.

Why are some people successful and others aren’t?
Why are some people happy and others aren’t?
The common denominator is the individual.

When it really comes down to what creates results, aka success, here it is:

Accountability – you and you alone are responsible for your own results.

The sooner you stop blaming your circumstances or others for your joy, money or opportunities, the sooner you’ll see that you can create more than you think you can.

Desire – What do you really desire? If you are attempting to create results because you think you “should” or to make someone else happy (or not disappoint them), then you won’t be fully invested in the process and the results either won’t last or they’ll be half-@$$ed.

Time – Sometimes you learn something and you put it into practice, only to see the result show up much later than you anticipated.

When you remove the pressure of “this has to happen in this amount of time,” then you’ll be surprised at how quickly things show up.

The other part of Time is sometimes we learn something that doesn’t pay off until years later. There was that ONE thing someone said that impacted you…maybe it’s that ONE reason why you invested in the program or product.

Alignment – Do things in the manner that works for you. Doing things in the style or essence of someone else will only work for so long (or not at all).

I had a mentor tell me to “do exactly what I tell you to do and it will work.”

I’m an entrepreneur, another word for rebel. When have I ever like to be told what to do? I was told I was uncoachable. The truth was, I didn’t want to be a robot and just imitate someone else’s business model.

If I did that my soul would die, just like it was in my corporate life.

And for some people, the “do what I tell you to do” model works. This business coach who told me to do exactly as she said started her business at the same time I did. She has a 5+ million dollar business based on a big following of people wanting to be told what to do. It totally works for her.

I took the longer route to find my rhythm. Will I have a 5 million dollar business? I’m not sure – I haven’t chosen that for myself yet. I’m cool with that.

At the end of the day, you give value. Some people will utilize it and do something with it, others won’t. Maybe it’s not a fit for them, maybe they don’t want it, maybe what you have to offer isn’t in alignment for the person. There are a thousand different reasons why. But none of them are your business.

When you give value from an authentic place, you give everything you can, and you do your best to empower people to see what’s possible, the rest is up to your client.

P.S. If you are complaining about your lack of results in a specific program you have or are invested in, you are mirroring that for your clients.
